An initiative dubbed Geita Kilimanjaro Challenge against HIV/Aids collected 180m/- last year, to bring the total funds obtained so far just short of 1bn/- since the inception of the campaign in 2002.
Geita Gold Mine (GGM) managing director Richard Le Sueur said the raised funds were donated to different organisations engaged in the war against HIV/Aids.
He made the remarks at the closing of the 2007 Kilimanjaro Challenge against HIV/Aids and the launching of preparations for this year`s event.
Sueur explained that of the 180m/- collected last year, 67m/- was donated to Moyo wa Huruma orphan centre in Geita District, while another NGO, Tanesa, received 67m/- and AMREF-Tanzania got 45.2m/-.
The MD said the initiative was intended to raise awareness of the HIV/Aids pandemic, assisting in bringing visibility and building national team spirit in the noble fight, and ensuring an annual financial contribution in support of HIV/Aids initiatives in the country.
