Women unaware of basic human rights

Poverty in the majority of families stem from the fact that many women in rural areas are not aware of their basic human rights, experts on gender empowerment are saying.

Pastors Grace Mutasa and Joseph Willium from Integral Assistance to Vulnerable Children and HIV Victims based in Zimbabwe contend that the only means to liberate women now is for them to know their rights and fight for them.

The pair conducted a four-day workshop in Kigoma recently which discussed capacity building among women and girls.

``We covered various aspects related to women rights, leadership development and gender equity, all aiming at making women gain knowledge of improving their standards of living at household level,`` noted Mutasa.

He mentioned access to production assets like the right to own land and inputs to enhance its productivity, access to microfinance and credits as crucial in improving their capital bases.
