Overcrowding and lack of security in the camps is making women and girls vulnerable to opportunistic sexual assault, UNICEF spokeswoman Veronique Taveau told reporters.
"Cases of rape are increasing" and will eventually show up in the country's HIV statistics as victims are not getting treatment within the recommended 72 hours to prevent infection, Taveau said.
Many of the estimated 255,000 people forced from their homes since the Dec. 27 vote have gathered close to schools and police stations in the hope that these will offer a measure of protection.
