Crown calls man who lied to sexual partners about HIV status manipulative

WINDSOR, Ont. - The Crown says a man who didn't tell his sex partners he is HIV-positive is "overwhelmingly manipulative" and should be declared a dangerous offender.

The hearing in Windsor, Ont., to determine if Carl Leone should be designated a dangerous offender is in the second day of Crown submissions. Assistant Crown attorney Frank Schwalm says Leone, who lied to his victims about his HIV status, cannot be trusted in the community.

Leone pleaded guilty to 15 counts of aggravated sexual assault, and if the court rules he is a dangerous offender, he could be jailed indefinitely.

Schwalm says if the designation isn't granted, the Crown is asking for consecutive sentences for each of the 15 victims, which would amount to between 30 and 50 years in prison.
